This is the fourth in a series of annual celebrations of some of the best short story writers in Australia, selected by a panel of judges. These sixteen stories were chosen from more than 650 entrants in the Furphy Literary Award 2023. Among them are established writers as well as debut authors who moonlight as GPs, Aussie Rules footballers and public servants.

These stories show Australia in all its diversity.

The stories in this year’s anthology encompass family dynamics, enduring love, death, care of nature, navigating a strange country, workplace politics, schoolyard antics, bonds forged in diversity, nostalgia road trips, passion for art and what inspires writing itself. They show us what we would rather not face and question, and then remind us about what’s important in life.

These stories capture us in all of our beauty and with all of our faults. Or do they?

It was Cate Kennedy’s story ‘Art and Life’ that emerged from the pack and declared the winner. Kennedy, a celebrated writer and poet, who loves the short story form, has written a funny, insightful story about a young classical violinist whose busking career takes an instructive turn.

Short stories have a way of encapsulating the world around us and within us. While storytelling is a universal thing, it’s the images in these sixteen stories that evoke a place and its people. Dead bats hanging on a wire, sport on the TV, figurines by a bed, teacups of yore and reusable coffee cups of now, the thrill of something new, the politics of a school staffroom, real and unreal memories, the joy of music, the weight of art, wildlife and more.

The enormously talented authors in this anthology delve into many things: the surety of an old Holden anchored in the weeds, food as it might be in the future, surfers facing the elements, a teacher caught in the crosshairs, things that are found but lost, and a town ‘big enough to be bigoted – too small to know it – too tired to care’.

The locations are quintessentially Australian – beaches, rural properties, dense bushland, deserts and towns, lard and small – as are the characters that inhabit them.  But the themes are universal in scope: love, fear, tolerance, death, life, rejection, truth and protection.

These stories capture us in all of our beauty and with all of our faults.  Or do they?
